About us
The Salish Storm Hockey Association (SSHA) provides a unique and barrier-free opportunity for Indigenous children and youth to participate in the sport of hockey.
By providing free programming, transportation, healthy food, equipment and culturally-informed mentorship and support, we strive to promote improvement of self-esteem, physical health and social skills of Indigenous children and youth through involvement in Hockey, and to increase capacity for Indigenous families to participate in the organized sport.
SSHA is a non-profit, volunteer-run association whose goal is to improve self-esteem, physical health, mental health and social skills of Indigenous children ages 6-18 through participation in hockey programs resulting in their successful integration into community minor hockey.
Our programs for children and youth build in discussion and exploration of making healthy life choices, stress management, leadership development and building healthy self-esteem. Our unique approach also promotes Indigenous teachings and the core values of respect for self and others, interconnectedness, and nutsa’maat shqwuluwun (together with one heart and one mind). The culturally-based curriculum engenders positive sense of Indigenous self-identity and pride in the participants’ cultural history and heritage.
